Quartz Bio contributes to open-source development

Quartz Bio released a software package in the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN): RcppProgress, an interruptible progress bar with OpenMP support for C++ in R packages.

Quartz Bio competes with international coders to speed up genetic association analyses

Quartz Bio participated to the GWASSpeedUp contest organized by Top Coder. The challenge was to accelerate the execution of logistic regression analyses on genome-wide genotyping data with covariates, benchmarked on the actual implementation in the PLINK package. Out of 320 competitors, 56 submitted a solution, and 35 only obtained a positive score. Quartz Bio CIO, Karl Forner, ranked 13. This contest was a great opportunity for Quartz Bio to sharpen its computational skills by competing against some of the best international coders, as well as to contribute to open-source development of cutting-edge methods that will benefit the entire scientific community.

Quartz Bio welcomes Stefano Ongarello as Director of Biometrics

Quartz Bio is glad to announce that Dr. Stefano Ongarello is joining the company as Director of Biometrics. Stefano holds a MD in Computer Science Engineering and a PhD in Bioengineering (Padua University, Italy) and eight years of experience spent in academia and industry. His main research interests have been focused on the statistical analysis of genomic, proteomic and biomarker data, with emphasis on machine learning, pattern recognition and classification, to improve early stage disease diagnosis and contribute to the implementation of stratified medicine.

Merck Serono, a division of Merck, Darmstadt, Germany, announced today the creation of Quartz Bio, the second spin-off company resulting from its Entrepreneur Partnership Program launched in April 2012. Quartz Bio will offer biomarker data management and exploratory biomarker analysis services for the pharmaceutical industry. Biomarker analysis is a critical step in the drug development process as it enables the identification of patient profiles that are most responsive to a given treatment.
